# How Gap Analysis Works

> FAII automatically identifies where your AI visibility is weakest and surfaces the best opportunities to improve - the foundation of intelligent content targeting.

<Info>
  **Quick Answer:** Gap analysis compares where you ARE visible to AI platforms versus where you SHOULD be. The difference reveals content opportunities ranked by potential impact on your AI Authority Rank.
</Info>

## What You'll Learn

* What gap analysis is and how it works
* The different types of gaps FAII identifies
* How gaps are scored and prioritized
* How to act on gap data

## What Is Gap Analysis?

Gap analysis answers: **"Where am I NOT appearing but should be?"**

FAII compares:

* Your mention rate across keywords and platforms
* Competitor mention rates for the same keywords
* AI Overview citations you're missing
* SERP positions where competitors rank but you don't

The difference = your opportunity gaps.

## How FAII Identifies Gaps

<Steps>
  <Step title="Baseline measurement">
    During each monitoring session, FAII records:

    * Which keywords mention your brand
    * Which keywords mention competitors
    * Where AI Overviews cite you vs. competitors
    * Your SERP positions vs. competitor positions
  </Step>

  <Step title="Gap detection">
    FAII identifies gaps by finding mismatches:

    | Your Status | Competitor Status | Gap Type |
    | :------------: | :---------------: | --------------- |
    |  Not mentioned |     Mentioned     | Chat gap        |
    | Not cited | Cited | AI Overview gap |
    |   Not ranking  |      Ranking      | SERP gap        |
    | Lower position | Higher position | Position gap |
  </Step>

  <Step title="Opportunity scoring">
    Each gap receives a priority score (1-100) based on:

    * Number of competitors appearing (more = higher priority)
    * Number of platforms showing the gap
    * Estimated search volume for the keyword
    * Relevance to your brand's offerings
    * Difficulty to close (based on competitor strength)
  </Step>

  <Step title="Actionable recommendations">
    High-scoring gaps appear in your Publishing Opportunities with:

    * Clear description of the gap
    * Which competitors appear
    * Recommended content type
    * "Generate Content" button for instant action
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Gap Types

### Chat Intelligence Gaps

Gaps in AI chatbot responses:

| Sub-type            | Description              | Priority |
| ------------------- | ------------------------ | :------: |
| **Universal** | Missing on ALL platforms | Critical |
| **Multi-platform**  | Missing on 2-3 platforms |   High   |
| **Single-platform** | Missing on 1 platform    |  Medium  |
| **Declining**       | Was mentioned, now isn't |   High   |

### SERP Intelligence Gaps

| Sub-type             | Description                  | Priority |
| -------------------- | ---------------------------- | :------: |
| **AI Overview** | Not cited in AI summary | High |
| **Top 10**           | Competitors rank, you don't  |   High   |
| **Featured snippet** | Competitors hold the snippet | Medium |
| **People Also Ask** | Not appearing in PAA | Medium |

### Combined Gaps

The highest priority gaps are those where you're missing in BOTH chat and SERP channels for the same keyword. These indicate a complete visibility absence.

## Acting on Gaps

### Quick action

1. Find a high-priority gap
2. Click **Generate Content**
3. Article created in 10-15 minutes
4. Publish to close the gap

### Strategic approach

1. Review all gaps weekly
2. Group by topic/theme
3. Create content clusters (one main article + supporting pieces)
4. Schedule publishing over 2-4 weeks
5. Monitor results in subsequent sessions

### Prioritization framework

| Factor      | Focus First    | Can Wait        |
| ----------- | -------------- | --------------- |
| Score       | 80+            | Below 60        |
| Competitors | 3+ appearing   | 1 appearing     |
| Trend       | Getting worse  | Stable          |
| Relevance   | Core service   | Adjacent topic  |
| Platform    | Multi-platform | Single platform |

## Tips

* **Not every gap needs closing** - Some keywords are tangentially relevant; focus on high-impact gaps
* **Group related gaps** - A comprehensive article on one topic may close multiple gaps
* **Watch for new gaps** - New gaps after a session may indicate competitor activity
* **Celebrate closures** - When a gap closes (you start appearing), your strategy is validated
* **Re-check after content** - Run a session 4-8 weeks after publishing to measure gap closure
